Qu Jiuhui’s research focuses on:
(1) Drinking water safety guarantee. Involved in the whole process risk control of drinking water quality, and put forward special attention to the new theory and process of "standard and effect synergistic control";
(2) Water purification and energy conversion. The principles, methods, materials, reactors and applications of pollutant removal and capacity synchronization in water are focused on the physicochemical and electrochemical theories and methods of pollutant production with electron transfer as the main mechanism.
(3) Water treatment process. Involved in flocculation, adsorption, membrane separation, electrochemistry and other methods, and proposed and explore the physical-chemical coupling micro-field structure and water treatment disruptive technology innovation.
(4) Water pollution control and ecological restoration in the basin. Involving the water quality change law, compound pollution and ecological safety of natural water bodies, the "ecological flux" and process control mechanism based on material flow are proposed and studied in depth.
In 2006, Qu Jiuhui, under the continuous support of the National Innovation Research Group Science Fund “Environmental Micro-Interface Process and Pollution Control” project, proposed a scientific idea for water pollution control and water purification based on the transformation of multi-phase micro-interface materials. It is found that some highly active oxidative free radicals can be efficiently produced by intentionally constructed heterogeneous surfaces and cooperate with multiphase micro-interface processes to reveal the response mechanism of pollutant structure to oxide species under different water treatment conditions. And morphological characteristics of micro-interface catalytic oxidation, pollutants transformation control and other key technologies, the creation of drinking water quality safety risk control technology system, successfully applied in dozens of projects such as the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, technical support to solve the Chinese hardship abroad The safety of drinking water in 63 embassies and consulates in the region.
Qu Jiuhui team found that the aromaticity and molecular weight of organic matter are the main controlling factors affecting the formation potential of disinfection by-products, and established a new method to remove the dominant precursors of disinfection by-products by using the advantageous coagulation morphology and adsorption micro-interface to solve the oxygen consumption. Organic materials and disinfection by-products meet the standard water quality problems and have been successfully applied in many large drinking water plants. It is found that the surface of the composite metal oxide and its combined micro-interface can obtain unique oxidation, adsorption and coagulation functions, breaking through the technical principle of trivalent arsenic and pentavalent simultaneous removal, and inventing online preparation and utilization of new ecological composite oxides. In addition to new arsenic technology, a new one-step arsenic removal process has been established to solve the international problem of simultaneous removal of trivalent arsenic and pentavalent under different water quality conditions, creating high-concentration arsenic-contaminated water treatment, high arsenic-containing wastewater treatment and drinking water. One-step method for removing arsenic and other types of engineering precedents and widely used, is highly recognized by international peers in this field.
As of February 2019, Qu Jiuhui has published more than 470 SCI academic papers (more than 17,000 citations, 68 h-index), published 3 academic monographs, and obtained more than 90 invention patents.
